Two Loves
The chain that moves from crank to block
Shifts us from life’s rut
Links us to some higher stuff, mind
Freed from paltry considerations, or
Weighty thoughts of nations
The grip of hand on bar our friendship clasp
Freedom of the roads within our grasp
Caress of wind, kiss of sun
You are there for me all seasons long
O’er hills our minds soar with the birds
Past sheep, less wool, from bodies shorn
Mountain lakes and valleys true
Ancient walls and bridges too
Distant view of low terrain
All within ones treasured day
Evening sun its pleasure spent
Down from height we quickly melt
Long sip of love, no lovers tiffs
Lives entwined and bodies ‘twixt
Then on one December day
Hidden frost before us lay
Our injuries they did abound
As we were lifted from the ground
Six long months the pain of separation spread
My love reclining in the outside shed
I a moping ’round the house
Acting like a mindless louse
‘Til frustrated wife did loudly shout
Take out your bike you lazy lout
A man’s two loves she understood, but
Which came first? – a hidden truth!
